"My love has lasted longer than the temples of our gods. No man ever suffered as I did for you. But the rest you may not know. Not until you are about to pass through the great night of terror and triumph. Until you are ready to face moments of horror for an eternity of love..." -Boris Karloff, The Mummy (1932)
Imhotep, the cursed priest, spoke the ancient words as she lay before him. His spell over her kept her sedate, in a place between sleep and wake. Unaware of what was to befall her. The time had come at last. He would bring back his love.
When those fools had found his grave and read the scroll, the Scroll of Thoth, they could not have imagined that they would breathe life back into his withered corpse. He was fortunate that they had not heeded the warnings. When he escaped from them with the scroll, he immediately knew what he must do.
He had to find his love, the Princess Ankh-es-en-amon. It took him 10 years to find her reincarnated soul, but what is a decade when you've been waiting for millennia. Her current body bore a striking resemblance to the princess he knew, the one he loved. A taboo love that the pharaoh could not allow, cursing Imhotep to be buried alive.
How many times had her soul come back to this world, while his lay buried beneath the burning sand? How many lovers had she had? Such things did not matter. She would be his, now and forever. Now, nothing could stop him. All that remained was to kill this body, then use the scroll to bring her ancient soul back to him. The soul who would remember his face, their old lives, the way things used to be.
He placed the ceremonial blade at her breast, reciting the words he had memorized. Piercing her skin, allowing her life to slowly flow from her. The markings on the blade glowing in the flickering firelight. Her breathing slowed as he held her as he continued his incantations. When she lay lifeless before him he began the forbidden ritual, using the same words that Isis used to return Osiris from the dead.
They would be together. Forever.
