When the glass was drained Nathan grinned in smug triumph and Emily’s ample chest heaved breathlessly.

I felt slightly awkward like a forgotten third wheel. Sitting opposite the pair in the circle I swirled my glass pensively in my hand.

The rich crimson whirlpool gave no answers but its heady potency clouded my judgement. Eventually I rose the glass to my lips and drained it with a swift gulp.

Both Nathan and Emily were staring at me with slack jawed surprise. I felt a little embarrassed and reluctant to meet their eye. The silence was unbearably awkward. Eventually it was Emily who broke the silence.

She took the second bottle of cheap wine and unscrewed the cap. I dared a glance at Nathan as Emily topped the two empty glasses. He still had a look of surprise but there was no hint of anger or disgust.
