“All ready for tomorrow?”

I look up from my laptop at one of the other philosophy professors. Tom is holding his bag and coat, ready to head out for the night. I shake my head.

“You know I’m a perfectionist. All lessons for the semester, planned out and ready.”

Tom grabs the name plate off the desk. “‘Hi, I’m Alex Swift, and I am a perfectionist.’ Yes, you are, but you need to live a little. Kathy and I are going out for a drink later, come meet us.”

“She have any friends coming with her?” I lean back, flash a wicked smile. “Being busy and all, I’ve been getting lonely.”

“And your keyboard needs replacing again, I’d guess.” Tom shakes his head. “You know Kathy isn’t bringing anyone around if she hears you’re going to be there, not after last time.”

“So don’t tell her.”

“Yeah, right.” Tom shakes his head. “5th Avenue Pub, the Irish joint. Eight o’clock, be there or be boring.”

I go back to my lesson plans, but Tom’s voice keeps running through my head. Last time hadn’t been a complete disaster. Kathy’s friend, Wendy, just hadn’t been that into me. I’d been into her, yes, but I stopped when she told me to. It wasn’t my fault I’d pulled my pants down before she could say stop. And now Kathy doesn’t want me to date any of her friends. Kathy doesn’t know how long it’s been since I’ve been with anyone. But it is a chance to go out and perhaps I’ll find someone there...

7:45 comes and here I am, walking into Tom’s favorite Irish bar. I hang my heavy wool overcoat on a chair at the bar and straighten the leather jacket I wore underneath. Far too cold for just one coat. My fedora lands on the bar, summoning attention. I order a micro brew stout, extra black. While I’m waiting for Tom to arrive I start looking around, seeing if there’s any potential tonight. One hand rubs my shaved head as I mark a few possible subjects off my list. Maybe I’ll just stay in the bar tonight...
