At first we thought it was a plague, some kind of virus or bacterial infection. It didn't matter, before we ever found out what was the cause, a quarter of the population had died. Another quarter had transformed into shambling undead, another, by some sick twist of fate, was immune to the plague and survived.
Then there were the vampires. In the early days we debated if it was some mutation of the disease that had transformed them or if they had always been among us, hiding. Wolves in sheeps clothing; once the herd began to die off, the wolves got desperate. They started herding and breeding the surviving humans. "Domesticating" their food source. Those that were caught were taken to the farms.
I managed to escape capture and now travel the open road, avoiding both the vampires hunting humans and the undead that would kill us both. Life was fine, if not hard. At least I was alive. At least I was free.
At least I thought I was, until I found her... She was starving and half dead in a ditch. She had picked the wrong place to hide from the sunlight, the shamblers tore her up and left her for dead. I knew if she had a little blood she could regenerate, I'd seen it happen before.
Maybe I was suicidal. Maybe I had just gone crazy. Maybe I was just lonely after 7 years wandering alone in the wasteland. But something inside me couldn't just leave her there in the gutter. Covering her in blankets to protect her from the sun, I brought her into a nearby ruined house. Setting her down in a study metal chair I made sure bind her arms and legs with ropes and chains. Pulling another chair over I sat across from her and pricked a finger. As the ruby drops fell into her open mouth, two dark eyes opened, stunned and confused.
