Today is my birthday. Nothing really special about it. Honestly, after 21 there's no real point in keeping track. All the usual comments on my User page of well wishers, the virtual conferences with friends and family occur, it's the same thing every year. Except this year, when I got home from work, there is a large plastic container from Ucore sitting in my living room.
At first I think it's some kind of prank. There's no way I could afford a Ucore live-in android on a low-level coders salary. They are the latest and most advanced semi-A.I. driven androids on the market with a fully customizable poly-synth body. Hell, with just a bit of code they can change from a professional looking secretary to a cat-girl dressed as a french maid! When I draw closer to the package though, a message plays.
"Hello grandson, it's your Nan. Happy birthday! I know you've been living alone this past year and thought you could use a bit of company. Now before you say it's too much money, why don't you spend the evening with your new friend and call me in the morning. Love you!"
As the message ends the egg shaped crate automatically opens. Inside is a fully functioning android. I walk up to the droid and press the start button located on the left earlobe of the unit. She comes to life, eyes opening wide for the first time.
