My husband and I (26 & 24) just moved here. A fresh start, new jobs, a beautiful home, everything we had worked so hard for finally falling into place. The neighborhood is nice, and people are friendly.

The first time I meet my neighbor, it’s brief. I’m juggling grocery bags, struggling with my keys, when a deep voice cuts through the evening air.

“Need a hand?”

I glance up to see my neighbor leaning against his car.

I nod, with a smile “Yeah, but my husband should be home soon.”

His eyes flick to my ring for half a second before meeting mine again. “That’s good,” he says with an easy grin. “It’s nice having someone to come home to.”

I laugh softly. “Yeah… it is.”

Another night, my husband is working late, and I find my neighbor standing outside his door as I arrive.

“You always get back this late?” His tone is light, almost casual.

“Not always.” I hesitate. “He’s just… busy.”
