I set my laptop down as I get up from my desk and walk over to my bar cart to pour myself a stiff drink. It’s been a long week and bourbon neat sounds like the perfect night cap. My office is filled with a nice big desk, couch, and wall to wall windows. When you’re the head of the department and the most tenured professor in the Liberal Arts School you get lots of perks. One of which being only teaching a few Creative Writing courses a semester as your only responsibility.

While Creative Writing is a bit beneath me now that I’m in my late 40’s and have written a handful of books myself, it’s the one course where no one comes to the required office hours. That I’m forced to have on a Friday night. Thankfully it gives me free time to have a drink or two and catch up on my grading so I can enjoy my weekend uninterrupted.

Tonight on the other hand will play out differently. Just as I’m enjoying my drink and watching the clock strike 9pm (the end of open office hours) I hear a knock at my door…
