You’re watching me sleep - my feet in fuzzy socks, my rosy mouth halfway open and slightly drooling. It’s charming, in its own way. Besides, you can’t really blame me. My surgery was only three days ago, and you’re confident that my body needs the rest.

You grab the remote to switch off the TV. The weird part about this whole thing to you is that we met just three weeks ago, at a Starbucks. You had found a post I made online. I live alone and was about to have surgery on my knees, and needed someone to help take care of me. I don’t have any friends and family in the area, and my apartment was up a flight of stairs. That’s how I ended up here on your couch, snoring softly.

You’ve never done anything like this before. Your day job is stressful and you’re constantly making high-stakes calls. You really should be working instead of this, and you have no idea what prompted you to even reply to that advertisement. But there’s something sweet about this girl, a few years your junior, clearly needing a guiding hand in her life.

I stir, big eyes blinking open. “Don’t turn it off,” I mumble, rolling into the couch. My tank top shifts, revealing the pale swell of my breast. You clear your throat, removing your hand from the remote, and look anywhere but there. You feel terrible for this - a girl in her late twenties, becoming a woman, finding her way, needing help and here you are…staring at her. Creepily.

Only one more week of this arrangement. Surely you can survive. Surely.
