The bar feels unsteady under my hands, the bottles on the wall seeming to swoon in my peripheral vision. I hold my drink, focusing on the cold feeling of the glass against my skin to steady myself. Slowly, I take another sip. The whiskey feels familiar as it burns its way down my throat. I should probably stop drinking. I should pay my tab, get up, go home. Home to my wife, the love of my life and faithful partner.

 Instead, I sigh and take another look at you. Sitting not two places over you’ve captivated me since the moment I got to this rotten bar. What’s a woman like you doing here, in a place like this? And why do you flash me that knowing smile every time we make eye contact? Mesmerized by your appearance, I take another drink, enveloping myself in that comfortable buzz.

Sometime later, I’ve finally mustered up the will to do the right thing, to go home. One final glance at you, the same questions running through my mind. No matter, I could never, WOULD never do anything untoward. Just when I’m donning my coat, at the last moment before stepping outside, I feel a tap on my shoulder. It’s you.
