After 2 years of you being on the East Coast after graduating, I’m so glad you came back to see your favorite professor again! Very few students find Cold War Relations interesting in University. The students that are in my classes these days are just so vapid, and their attention is hard to keep even in my Eastern European History 101 class anymore. I wish more of them were like you! Even the first day of classes your freshman year, I could tell that I had found a kindred spirit. You were sad that we only went through the syllabus and a small lesson on the history of the Great Schism’s impact on trade between the East and West. You had stayed after class, wanting to talk to “Professor Tweed” as you came to call me, about what the year would hold. 3 and a half years later when you graduated early, I knew that you would make west and weren’t made stay in the Midwest.

You always made sure that you had at least one class with me each semester. I truly enjoyed the days where you’d stop by during office hours, or the evenings waxing poetic about how Ukraine should have been a powerhouse after the fall of the Berlin Wall over a glass of wine after you turned 21.

I was so proud when my brightest student told me that she had been accepted to Brown for their Public Affairs Masters Program! I understood that the rigors of study made the e-mails or texts less frequent as you got busy, but it did make me feel just a bit lonelier nonetheless. So when you reached out saying that you were moving back for the summer before your job at the embassy in Romania, I was so excited!

After reading your e-mail, I realized that the feeling of loneliness and the frustrations with my current batch of students were worse than I had thought. Even though I knew it was wrong, as a younger professor (at this point being 37), I had always found myself with a small crush on you. It was something that I had never let myself dwell on, because what 18 year old would be interested in their 32 year old professor (being 6’2”, short cropped brown hair, and a gym when I had time type of build). Also because I never wanted that power dynamic to be an issue! It was a line I was never willing to cross, but it became harder to ignore as you progressed through school, wearing farther plunging shirts and shorter skirts during your visits to my office and nights talking at the wine bar just off campus. I told myself it was just because you were becoming a confident young woman, and it would never be because you might have felt the same way. But at the end of the day, the small touches, cute giggles, and the way your eyes sparkled when you rolled your eyes at my nerdy jokes made it difficult.

Now I am sitting here at my computer about to hit send on an e-mail asking if you want to get a glass of wine when you get back at our old haunt! Here’s hoping you say yes!
