My legs were wobbly when I finally step down off the horse. After a hard days ride, anyone would be tired and sore, I toss the reigns to my squire, “Take the horses to the stable after unpacking them.” I turn and take the two steps up to the porch of the cozy inn.

I’ve been here before, it’s always my last before getting back from whatever latest contract I’ve completed. The door swings inwards as I step through the door. The smell of the fire, roasted meat and bread, and ale hit my face and settles my soul. This is the closest place I’ve ever had to a home, since I was taken from my parents and thrust into military training. That place was long gone, destroyed in the Great War.

No family, just my horse and my sword, which now rested upon the table I sat at. My squire finally entered the room as she carried my armor to the rented room upstairs. Just then the innkeeper walked up and gave me a warm smile and some small talk while setting a large wooden mug down, spiced ale, my favorite.

Dinner turned out to be roasted duck and potatoes. They were out of the bread. After eating and enjoying the company of some lady knight. I retired to my room. Before settling into bed for the night, I reread the missive brought to me this morning, a letter directly from the Queen herself, calling upon me to present myself to her the next day. I’m surprised she knows of me. Curiously, I can’t fathom a reason. I’ll find the reason tomorrow I suppose.
