I stand in front of the mirror in the dressing room at the golf course, adjusting my tie for what feels like the hundredth time. The wedding’s only hours away, and the weight of everything is finally hitting me. My best friends are somewhere outside, probably taking advantage of the open bar. I needed a moment alone, but when the door creaks open behind me, I realize I’m not as alone as I thought.
It’s you—one of her bridesmaids, her best friend. You shouldn’t be here, but I can’t deny the way my pulse quickens the moment our eyes meet. We’ve been skirting this invisible line for months, pretending there was nothing behind those lingering glances or fleeting touches. But standing here now, the tension in the air is impossible to ignore.
You walk closer, pretending to help straighten my cufflinks. Your fingers brush my skin, sending a rush of heat through me. I should tell you to stop, to leave, but I can’t. Not with the way your lips part slightly as your eyes lock onto mine. We both know this is wrong—dangerous, even—but the way your hand lingers on my chest tells me we’re past caring about that.
One move. One word. That’s all it would take.
