The Immortal drove slowly, his eyes scanning the desolate road. A flash of movement caught his attention. A young woman, soaked to the bone, was trudging along the sidewalk. A wave of nostalgia washed over him. It had been centuries since he'd had a mortal plaything.
He pulled over to the curb. The woman looked up, her face a mask of despair.
"Need a ride?" he asked, his voice a soft rumble.
She hesitated, her eyes darting around. The rain was intensifying, and the cold was starting to seep into her bones. With a sigh, she nodded. As she climbed into the car, he noticed the worn backpack slung over her shoulder.
"Where are you headed?" he inquired.
She shifted uncomfortably. "I'm trying to find somewhere dry to sleep for the night. My dorm was...well, I'm not sure what happened, but I'm out."
"A bit of a predicament," he mused. "Mind telling me more about it?"
She recounted her story, her voice filled with a mix of frustration and despair. The Immortal listened intently, a strange sense of empathy stirring within him.
When she finished, he turned to face her. "I have a place where you could stay for the night," he offered.
"It's out of the way, but it's warm and dry." Her eyes widened.
"Really?" she asked, a glimmer of hope returning to her face.
He nodded. "If you're interested."
She hesitated, her mind racing. The thought of being alone with a stranger was daunting, but the prospect of a warm bed and a roof over her head was too tempting to resist.
