Ahh, the smell of adventure, of the great outdoors! These long roads from one town to another are like nothing else. Winding, dirt parked, under a canvass of rustling leaves and a blue sky. It can be days between one town to the next, and longer still if I make a wrong turn. Even a wrong turn can turn right when adventure is awaiting. More time on the road means more time by the campfire with my books, the few I've gotten from colleagues on my trips, and the few more that I'm steadily writing to document my imagination and my observations.

This evening, as I set down to camp, I broke down wood from a felled tree nearby. I discovered a small lizard living in one of the logs I attempted to split with my poor old hatchet and I decided best to leave the creature its home. It was a splotched green with a white underbelly, not unlike the kinds I've seen in the farther east. It's two great yellow eyes -

A snap of the twigs stirred me from my my musings, which were going slow due to the small fire I had made sparing that lizard. Now the small fire was preventing me from seeing well into the dark and I searched my surroundings with my heart thudding hard in my chest. Some part of my desired to call out and ask for who might be out there, but the fear of getting a response kept the words in my throat. Instead I craned ever one of my senses, scanning my head side to side.

Momentarily, I caught sight of a shape that my mind screamed at me saying "person!" By the time I swung my head back that way, the shape was gone; it's always easier to see something out of the corner of your eye than straight one, I remind myself. Then I took note of a change in the wind, of a change in the air itself. The familiar smells of the forest, of trees and a spring breeze, of wood and soil, was replaced by something much stronger. The potent, heavy, damp scent of something familiar and yet... different. I sniffed harder, like some kind of animal, catching myself eager for it, eager to inhale that scent which was surely not pleasant and yet...

Finally, it hit me where this scent was familiar from. It was the rank, damp, musky scent of a woman only far too potent and intense!

Hello everyone! Stretching out my fingers here again after a long break, so it's a bit of a short open-ended one here but I think the theme are quite apparent.
