I've always been interested in traditional female coverings - veils, shawls, hijabs, even the more extreme versions, like niqabs. The way they symbolize purity, humility, and submission, the way they both hide and reinforce our sexuality... it's something that I've always been drawn to, but never really had the chance to explore, since I grew up in a culture where it isn't practiced.
I feel like there's this weird duality with female coverings where, on the one hand, they are shielding us from the male gaze, from being ogled and objectified and sexualized... but also, on the other hand, by showing that we have to hide our bodies to be shielded from those things, they almost feel like an acknowledgement that the female body is meant to be ogled and objectified and sexualized. And every time we go out in one of them, we're acknowledging that, admitting that our lurid and provocative figures don't belong anywhere outside of the home. It's weird, and yet I can't help but find it arousing, too.
Today, I want to connect with someone who finds his topic (and this duality) as interesting as I do. I'd love to the deeper meanings behind traditional attire and value the distinct roles that men and women play. I promise to listen attentively, respect your perspectives, and be honest about how I feel - and don't worry, I'm open to chatting whether or not you come from a culture with female coverings!
I respond fastest on chat, just an FYI! Hope to hear form some of you soon!
