I always found myself anxious when it was that time to schedule a doctor’s appointment. It wasn’t the fear of finding out if I had a benign medical condition or not, or whether I would need to do more lab work. No, my fear stemmed from the sheer embarrassment of being exposed, even in such a formal setting. There was something unnerving about it that I never seemed to outgrow. By this point, it was just something I would power through. Something I lived to bury deep inside while I was asked to remove my clothes and put on a medical gown.

As I had run through the usual routine of waiting patiently in the lobby for my name to be called out, have some small talk with the nurse while she weighed me and asked me simple medical questions, my anxiety started to kick in when I was told to take a seat at the end of the bed until the doctor came in. As the door closed, my nerves started to shake, rattling through my entire body. My foot began to tap as I eyed the clock attached to the wall above the doorway, begging for the next hour to fly by.

My heart dropped as the doorknob began to turn.
