You were one of my students at the university and weren’t doing too well in my course. You decided that you need to finally take advantage of office hours and see if there’s anything you can do to improve your grade. You stop by and sit as I look through your work to give you advice and as you sit there you look at the bizarre collection of books on my shelf.

“Hypnosis, huh? You have a lot of books about that.”

I look up from my papers, “oh yeah, I use it a lot in practice and do a great deal of research on the subject.” I pull out a piece of paper and hand it to you. “Here are some of the studies I’m working on,” I say, handing it to you. You look it over and see at least 10 different studies looking at various subjects. One sticks out and makes you chuckle: “Hypnosis to treat female orgasmic issues.” I look up and question your reaction. “Oh, the orgasm research. Just…interesting.”

“Ah yeah,” I grumble, “it’s been very promising.”

I stop what I’m doing and look over to you. “Listen, generally your performance isn’t looking good. Extra credit might get you up to at least a C as long as you do well on the final.” I put your file away. “Extra credit can be extra papers or volunteering as a research assistant or subject.” I wait for you response and see you starting to get worried.

“Ok, sure, I can be a research subject,” you say with worry then try to make a joke out of it, “at least I’ll get to orgasm for one of them.” I lol at your response without a reaction.

“Not sure you meet the criteria. But if you’re interested in helping with the study, take this and come by tomorrow morning. You’d need to be trained then can join me for a session with a participant.” I say, handing you a book about hypnosis.
