Every student is provided the rules of the college at orientation. Every student knows that the consequences of breaking our most serious rules are different than other institutions. We don’t just expel student outright for dishonesty, but rather offer a choice to accept a punishment instead.

So you knew what you were risking when you submitted a term paper to your English professor that had been written in substantial part by an AI. You knew that you could either be expelled or you could come to me, in the school’s administration building, to be strapped, caned, and/or paddled on your bare bottom.

I received an email indicating that you had chosen the punishment—a wise choice considering you were in your fourth year. I asked you to come by at 3:00.

As the time approached, I read over your file. Generally you were a very good student: a 3.5 GPA, active in a service organization, a part time employee of the school library. What had you been thinking risking it all like this?

The paper you had submitted was an obvious fake. The language was too stilted, the observations too broad for college-level work—a quick check through our AI detection software had flagged it immediately.

I went over to the cabinet at the corner of my office where I kept a small assemblage of implements. I considered which one to bring out. On the one hand, this was your first offense—the cane seemed too harsh. On the other hand, this was an egregious offense—cheating on a term paper that determined half of your grade. I removed a wooden paddle and a small leather strap. Perhaps a combination of both would serve the purpose.

I heard a soft knock at the door, and knew you had arrived.
