Michael never spared her much of a second glance during their time growing up together, and he didn't think she'd have wanted him to anyway. She was always just one of the guys; she grew up with three brothers, and her mother also only had brothers, so it was almost second nature to her. But that doesn't mean she never noticed him. But she knew her place in the group. She heard the way the guys talked about other girls, she saw the way they looked at other girls, and she knew she wasn't on their radar. That didn't make it sting any less that Michael didn't want her, but she could at least temper her expectations.

But then college happened.

A sports scholarship took her several states away, and a family emergency meant she couldn't come home for winter break. She hadn't seen Michael or any of the neighborhood gang in a whole year, and she didn't know how they'd react to how she'd changed. Once she was finally outside of their group, she met new friends at school that showed her that she can be athletic and enjoy guy-coded stuff, while also embracing her femininity. So she traded in the baggy t-shirts and basketball shorts for clothes that suited her body better. That, paired with the way her body was developing and the change in attitude brought on by her new friends, made her a whole new woman.

It seems like the rest of the guys didn't even notice, when she came home for the summer. They fell back into old habits, and they couldn't see through the veil of "she's just one of the boys" that had been pulled over their eyes for over a decade. But Michael noticed. And she noticed him noticing. Finally, after years of crushing on him, she had his attention.

Hey, DPP! I had a fun but perhaps slightly cliche idea today. The "one of the boys" tomboy gets a glow-up at college and starts a fling with her childhood crush once they're back home for the summer. It's a little pastiche, yeah. But cliches become cliches for a reason, right? It's a classic!
