College was expensive, and was only getting more expensive in todays world of inflation. Thankfully my dad had a good job at a mid sized company, but I was also lucky that his company was hiring summer students so I could make a few extra dollars for books and…well…some fun right?

The head of the company, Mr. Wilson, was a nice enough man it seemed. He was older, in his late 50’s, portly, married, and often very busy. I had seen him in the hallways, and once in an elevator, but had never so much as exchanged a word with him. He had an air of control and an edge of fear about him.

So it was with great surprise that Thursday afternoon, when I got to my cubicle after lunch, that there was a note telling me to report to Mr. Wilson’s office at 3pm.

When I arrived, I was nervous, worried I had done something wrong and was about to be fired. As I sat across from Mr. Wilson, his secretary, Janice, a very attractive older woman, closed the door behind her.

“Samantha…I won’t beat around the bush, have some bad news…,”

With those words my life began to unravel. The screen shots of my father’s gambling on company computers. The spreadsheets documenting how he’s been embezzling money from the company to cover his gambling debts for years. The staggering amounts, into the hundreds of thousands.

And then came the words of never forget. “Your father will be fired, and arrested, in the next hour…unless…”
