Being young and living downtown has its advantages. The hip, urban areas bring an energetic atmosphere all to themselves. But sadly the bar scene gets old fast: drinks are incredibly expensive, the same people are there night in and night out. It’s almost more of a chore to head to the bars than it is a fun experience. I happen to live across the street from the fabulous Claremont hotel. Ritzy, old fashioned. It’s a giant wedding space that typically books events for no less than 200 guests. People fly in, book a room for the night and live lavishly under the fun of an open bar. Sometimes you just have to put your inhibitions to the wind when you’re drunk at a celebration. And because it’s such a big gathering of people many from out of state, it’s just natural that people will no show at the last minute unannounced. But instead of a traditional guy wingman, I attend these with my good friend Sarah. She never turns down a fun night, free booze and isn’t afraid of going upstairs with a groomsman herself. And the best part of wedding season is every night is different. Some nights you have a bunch of single bridesmaids who are jealous that their good friend found love and are feeling slightly selfish after a day of doing everything for her and posing for every single photo. Other nights it’s friends of the mother of the bride. She’s looking to have her first fun night in months but her husband is watching some sporting event or glued to the bar. She just wants someone to dance with her, but her husband won’t even make that effort for her. Or big family weddings, where girls are just looking for anyone who isn’t their cousin.
