God, how did it come to this? How did you fall from grace so hard? You were the most sought after drama coach at one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Your hourly rate was in the hundreds of dollars. You coached, cultivated, and counseled students who went on to be Broadway Stars, Emmy Winners, fucking Avengers, for Christ's sake. What happened? How did it all go so wrong?

And, while it might sound harsh to say, that results in a drama department packed to the brim with less than talented, less than bright, more than optimistic young women who think that they're just one star role away from fame and fortune. They weren't worth your time, you'd have better luck serving as a vocal coach for Helen Keller, and she's fucking dead. You're better off just letting them know that they better study hard or marry a rich man, instead of wasting their time. It would be cruel to give them any sort of false hope.

You wouldn't really take advantage of them, would you?

Uh, fuck yes, you would. What else do you have to do? What else do you have to lose?

It's the same every semester. Fall musical, winter musical, spring musical, it doesn't make a damn bit of difference. Dozens of girls try out who aren't even fit to sing in their own shower, much less on a stage, and you have to sit through all of them. Take notes, pretend to care, clap condescendingly, and say some bullshit like "It's just not the right time for you." or "We might have a better role for you next year." Maybe it's mean to crush their dreams, but it would be even worse to give them false hope. As far as you're concerned, you're just doing them a favor by telling them now.

Well, sitting through all those bullshit auditions? That's your good deed for the term, and it doesn't deserve to go unrewarded. So, while you're trying not to plug your ears as the eighth delusional white girl in a row tries to belt out "Halo", you make another list.

Which girl is the closest to making it? Which girl seems to be the most gullible? The most desperate? The most... flexible?

The answer to those questions is usually the same girl.

So, out of the goodness, charity, and generosity of your heart, you give the girl a callback. Invite her to return next week, meet you one on one, go over some material. It's not normal, of course, this is something that you reserve for only the most talented girls, sweetheart. And, if the material you give her to read is different than the initial audition, that's fine. It'll broaden her range. If you require her performance to be a bit more physical than usual, that's no concern. It will demonstrate her dedication.

Honestly, the more you think about it, it's hard to believe that you've gotten away with this shit for as long as you have.
