Several years ago my wife and I found out that she was unable to have children. Unfortunately, - her baby clock keeps ticking.
She obsesses over every new mother that she comes into contact with. To complicate matters, she is a physician at a women's shelter. She tries to fill her emptiness with helping the bruised and traumatized women. They arrive with the weight of the world on their shoulders. Frightened and pregnant occasionally with toddlers in tow, they have nothing in the way of material goods.
Tonight she came home clearly frustrated, "it is not fair" she said quietly. I was surprised as she seemed resigned to the continual disappointment. Apparently, at the end of the day a pregnant mother-to-be with a newly sprained arm came in for help.
The young woman wanted to go back to her boyfriend and needed a ride after her appointment. My wife Cara convinced her to stay the night at the shelter, she agreed only if Cara would take her back to her abusive "boyfriend" in the morning. Cara was convinced he would harm her again, she was on the couch staring at her phone allllllllll night.
She left for work by the time I woke up in the morning. I knew she was unhappy with the situation and texted her a few times without a response. She was one of the walking wounded, clinicians exhausted by COVID.
That evening after work I walk in and am surprised to see her smiling. As we sat down to dinner a few minutes later, I take my first sip of wine after a very long day at the office. I hear a noise from our basement. We make eye contact for a split second, then I stand up and lunge for the closet where I keep a shotgun.
She stops me with a hand on my arm. "She is downstairs". I look at her and draw a blank. Clearly our dog is sitting on the rug by the front door and is a male. "What?"
She responds by heading for the door to our basement and I follow her. I am shocked at what I see. My wife who has always been a compulsive rule follower, has somehow managed to both kidnap and restrain the girl. She looks at me "Can we keep her?"
RP the pregnant girl, my wife or both. I have a rather strange experience that inspired this post that we can chat about if you would rather.
