Before I tell you how I had my most memorable Memorial Day ever, I should go back to the beginning.

It was winter break during my junior year of college. I was walking down the hallway at home, munching on what was my fourth or fifth leftover Christmas cookie when I glanced at an old picture of me that was prominently displayed on the hallway table.

The picture was my senior-year photo from high school. While the picture was only about three years old, I could hardly recognize myself. I was smiling in the picture, happy about what lay ahead of me as I was getting ready for the next step of my life.

If the old me saw how I looked now, I sure as hell wouldn’t have been smiling. I had put on over 40 pounds in the time since I graduated, my body being built by bad food, good alcohol and a lack of sleep and exercise. In a way, I couldn’t blame my mother for still showing off that picture. Who would be proud of what I looked like?

I sure wasn’t, which is why I decided at that moment to try and get back to that size again.

I remember getting back to school at the start of January and going to the rec center for the first time, seeing quite a few people who had the same hopes that I did. By Valentine’s Day, I was one of the few among those faces who were still working out regularly. I started watching what I was eating, and I cut back on drinking. I was getting a good amount of sleep each night; well, when classwork cooperated, anyway.

Before I knew it, the school year was over, and I had successfully lost nearly every pound I had gained since starting college. I regained my confidence and my smile, leading to a much better social life and even a couple of hookups before we went home for the summer.

So now that we’re all caught up…

My parents decided to have family over for a small Memorial Day cookout. Dad was grilling burgers and hot dogs while the rest of the family was hanging out in the backyard, swimming in our pool and enjoying the beautiful weather. I was the last to join, wanting to make a big show of my new body in a pair of swim trunks I hadn’t worn in years.

I opened the glass sliding door leading out to the back patio and confidently strode out onto the deck. Right away, I heard a wolf-whistle from across the deck. It was my aunt, who grinned at me. “Who’s that stud coming out here?” she called out with a laugh.

I smiled back and began to walk in her direction when I was stopped by my grandmother. “Oh, Ethan, you look so good, dear,” she said to me, giving me a hug. She then excitedly ran her hands up and down my arms before giving my biceps a quick squeeze. “Ooh! And so strong, too!” she said with a wink. “I’m so happy for you.”

“Thanks, Nana,” I replied before going to one of the deck chairs. I took off my shirt and set it on the chair before jumping into the deep end of the pool. As I came up for air, I was greeted by my sister and cousin, who were standing in the shallow end.

“You look good, bro,” my sister said, while my cousin gave an appreciative nod in agreement. Even though both were wearing sunglasses, I could feel their eyes on me the whole time.

After wading around for a couple minutes, I walked up the steps leading out of the pool. And as I looked toward the grill, where Mom was standing by Dad, I made eye contact with Mom…and then she ever so lightly bit her bottom lip.

Like I said, it was quite a memorable Memorial Day.
