It's all a lesson of making sure you read the fine print. You were fresh out of college, decided to focus on your career instead of continuing a college relationship, were in a new city and starting the career you were going to do until early retirement. While the relocation bonus was decent for the first job our of college - it wasn't enough to put you in a "Good Area" of town - so you stretched it a bit and maxed out your credit cards, took out a payday loan, and purchased a car so you didn't have to take public transportation.
You didn't factor in the other costs like deposits for new utilities, purchasing the "basics" to have a functioning place, paying for your own car insurance, phone bill, etc. So you responded to an ad that was posted on a bulletin board in a supermarket close to your home. No payments for 3 months, No interest for first year, cash paid up front. When you entered the office to sign the paperwork, provide proof of residence it was a nice office - seemed legit - the people were so nice and everyone was smiling and so polite to you.
3 months had gone by - you were starting to get your feet under you - a few more unexpected events that of course cost money occurred and when you got a text notification, with an e-mail, and a letter in the mail your jaw dropped, apparently the 3 months of no payments were just rolling over each month, the "Cash Loan" fee was almost as much as the initial payment, and the administrative costs were half of that - providing a bill you didn't have half to pay in your bank account today and would take a good chunk of your next check - which was your rent check.
You shrugged it off - after each month of no contacting you and going past due - you got a text - an e-mail - and a mailer indicating you were past due - the late fee was astronomical - the amount due in full now that you were past due with a ton of fee's and interest tacked on for "Violating" the agreement. What were they going to do? Sue you? Take all you have? Life was just starting to get on track and make sense - even attempting to pay some of this debt would put you back farther then when you first needed the loan. Besides the place you went to was now a little chicken tenders shack - you only had the ability to make a payment online now - perhaps the business went under?
A year went by after you had taken the loan - making no payments - laughing with your friends about this bill you would receive monthly that just get getting bigger and bigger to astronomical amounts - the last bill you received indicating final chance to pay the entire amount before further action would be taken......
It was a quiet night - the night of the "Final Due Date" of the bill that was pinned via a magnet to your fridge. You finished a glass of wine and put away the dishes from the simple dinner you made for yourself. You sat on your couch and turned on Netflix to finally finish up the latest season of Love Island when the clock struck 9:01 PM - you thought you heard a noise like a scratching noise at your front door - and looked towards the hallway where the front door was. Perhaps it was just an animal or something - you shrugged it off and continued to watch a heated argument between a newly formed couple - until suddenly a large gruff calloused hand covered your mouth as 2 hands gripped each arm and pinned you to your coach, frantic your eyes went from left to right barely catching glimpses of who was holding you down until a well dressed man stepped into the living room - turning on the light and turning off the TV - holding the Final Notice Bill that was pinned to your fridge in his hand and holding it up - "Hello darling, we've been trying to reach you - address seems correct." He took out a phone and sent a message - your phone vibrated with an unknown number, "Phone number still active - tsk tsk darling - it's time to pay...."
