You've lived in this apartment building for a little over a year and in that time you got to know some of your neighbors. One of them moving out and leaving a vacant apartment. And as far as you know, it's been vacant for almost three months now.

It wasn't. I moved in almost immediately after the other person moved out. The reason you didn't know about it is that I work the graveyard shift and am sleeping throughout the day, waking up at 9pm and leaving for work around 10pm. Returning at 6 or 7am, before you wake up.

Eventually, you start to suspect something is going on, hearing things from the apartment, someone talking, sounds of a TV, smells of food cooking. You've come over and knocked on the door several times only for you to be ignored. I tend to be a heavy sleeper.

You get concerned enough to call the building manager and tell them you think someone is squatting in the apartment, but they tell you that I'm there legally and pay rent like everyone else.

You make the decision to meet me. Just to be neighborly. You just didn't realize it would be so difficult. You hang out with your door open, hoping you'll see me in the hall at some point and can talk. It doesn't happen.

A few weeks go by and you kind of just give up until one Friday afternoon.

You heard a knock on your door and went to answer it, seeing a UPS delivery man. You weren't expecting a package but you opened the door and signed for it anyway, figuring it was one of your neighbors'. It was. You looked at the name. Chris Sanders. And the apartment number was mine. You smiled to yourself. You knew I'd try and my delivery, I had to come over to your place. Just to be sure you walked over and wrote a note and stuck it to my door.

Saturday is my day off, and I saw the note the night before when I went to work. It's almost 7pm when I make my way over to your place and knock on the door.
