writing snippet - first person - arctic wasteland

Even with the thick scarf wrapped all the way up to my nose, tendrils of breath dissipated into the chilly air as I pant with heavy breaths. My layered frame scrambled through the sinking snow with a struggled run, every step carrying the weight of my pack, rifle, and stacking snow as the storm only got worse.

The third shot rang out with an echo that seemed closer now, the ringing loud enough to make me gasp with a startled drop into the snow. I cursed under my breath, a panic seizing my rapid heart rate. I had no idea who or what was being shot at -- but all the birds had flown away, deer had fled, and any wolf could outrun me. Whatever was being hunted wouldn't be spared after three bullets were already wasted.

I didn’t want to be the one left to find out who was on the other side of the firing gun. My eyes squinted against the screen of falling frost, trying to remember which way I was supposed to go, the incoming storm only getting worse with each minute. With an impulsive guess of direction, I kicked up a flurry of snow as I got back to my feet, taking off running again. Anywhere was better than waiting there.
