They weren't - my dad was a long haul trucker and mom was a waitress. They made okay money for our little town, but we never aspired to bigger or better things.

But I was a great swimmer. It was my ticket out of poverty and the first chance any of us had at something more. I'd gotten almost a full ride to a big college in the city, and I'd taken it right away. The cost that was left over was manageable with some sensible loans and an on-campus job.
