There’s some overlap, ‘course, like Grandfather Paradoxes aren’t allowed by nature, but it’s also illegal to go back just to make sure you don’t trip up the stairs at your big business conference or whatever

For the most part it was an exploratory tool. Lots of cloaking devices to remain unseen, hover-shoes to make sure there’s no footprints, sound-jammers to allow conversation

Hell most researchers got what they needed from the tech in the first decade it was around. Now it mostly existed as a museum tool, tour guides taking tourists to see the invention of fire ‘n stuff like that

Don’t get me wrong though, it was still heavily guarded, you couldn’t get your hands on one of those devices unless you happened to be some expert thief posing as a guide for the better part of a year, slowly earning the trust of the whole staff only to betray those relationships in the pursuit of some ridiculous goal to travel and explore time unsupervised, playing with its threads for your own amusement but never going to far as to hurt the timeline, all the while stealing the greatest treasure of all…
