I am in the fortunate position of having a fully remote job with decent pay, but as is the case for many these days, that's enough to scrape by in major cities rather than progress.
Recently, a friend of mine who is not remote bit the bullet on buying a house in rural Nova Scotia because it is utterly impossible for him or most people to buy a home in Toronto (>$1 million easily). He worked on the place to get it up to spec and is now renting it out to a guy while he continues to live in the big city. In the future, he will use the place as a summer house, something to AirBnB, or maybe even move out there as his main base.
This has got me thinking about the remote lifestyle and what I could do with this. I have EU and Canadian passports and have a vague idea of buying somewhere beautiful and affordable to set up as my own base that I could work from and travel as I please. Spain, Portugal, the Azores, or maybe rural France come to mind. It's one thing to find properties in a relatively affordable range, but I'm sure there are all sorts of costs and considerations on top of this I need to know about, so I'm hoping someone here can elucidate me to the realities of such a move.
