I agree that using basic skills for resource generation sucks. But having no resource management at all would be way too easy. So what are your thoughts on how to substitute that? Diablo 2 did it by chugging mana potions which is not really (maybe a bit) better imho.. it somehow shouldn't be too easy to maintain mana but also not annoying or boring.
My (still quite diffuse) idea: use a "mini game" like in some shooter games where you have to press the reload button at perfect timing to reload instantly. This would take some skill, especially in intense fights but if you concentrate you could keep up the resources forever.
I'd be happy to hear more ideas :)
