Technical Issue / Question

Last night I made a new character for the start of the new season. played for about 20 levels and then went to sleep. this morning when I logged in to play I was met with a notification that if I wanted to participate in the season, I would have to make a new character. I know it was only a few hours of playing lost, but what the hell happened? Has anyone else experienced this and if so is it a bug or did I do something I shouldn't have? If this is gonna be a common occurrence, I think I'm just gonna refund this game and play something else.
