Hi guys
do insurance companies view vials vs pens as separate medications for renewal purposes ?
tor example , I have both Humalog pens and vials rx at the pharmacy. I just refill pens every month but needed a refill earlier this month. pharmacist says if I fill the vials rx then my pens won’t be covered when they’re due for refill. Is this the case ?
I’ve never had experience doing this w insulin. but with regular meds I know dosage changes on rx allow early fills.
i was prescribed corticosteroids and they’re upping my BG significantly and making me use a lot more insulin than usual. Doc that rx me won’t give me a script for more insulin. Says I need to book and see my endo yadda yadda. I know my endo will just say this is temp side effects. And won’t change anything.
for me I just want to fill extra so I have a buffer of insulin in my fridge since I’m using up more of my buffer if that makes sense.
insurance will prob want a doc to approve anying like this. But maybe they just allow a one off early fills of my pens ? Or do I try to get the vials filled , they’re listed as a separate line on the formulary albeit the dosage will be the same as the pen rx. Not sure if that will then push out my pen refill schedule.
appreciate any thoughts on this.
