How is it that you guys are having so many interactions with the HR?

Post Body

I have been reading the posts on this subreddit for a while now and so many of the posts here are about how the HR is being unreasonable. The HR doesn't do anything. Or some form of a complaint about the HR.

I have went straight for my masters after B.Tech and I never worked in India. All of my work experience is with product based companies in the US. I need to return back to India in the next 3 to 4 years to take care of my parents. These posts are really really scaring me.

To me the HR is just another department like the Accounts department or the Marketing department or something. In the 6 years I have worked in the US. There are exactly 3 interactions I had with the HR in my whole entire career:

  1. I got extremely drunk at an office party and I was crying and saying that I was going to commit a suicide. The HR forced me to talk to a therapist. Made me sign a document that if I don't attend all the therapy sessions then I can be fired.
  2. My boss said something racist about Indians and I had to report him.
  3. Me and a co-worker had a nasty argument. We were not shouting or resorting to name calling or anything. It was just very contentious. My boss overreacted in this situation to be honest. Even the HR said something along the lines of "I honestly didn't wanted to talk to you about this, but your boss made me talk to you."

Most of the people would go through their whole entire career without having any interactions with the HR at all. If the HR is talking to you, it means that either you or someone else is almost on the verge of getting fired from your/their job. Even when you are negotiating your salary, you negotiate with a recruiter who talks to the HR on your behalf. I have never directly negotiated with a HR my salary in my whole entire life. I can't stress this enough, it's extremely abnormal to me that someone is directly talking to the HR.

In a lot of situations, the HR makes your boss talk to you, first. They never directly get involved. Like I know a guy who got into a very nasty fight with the parking lot attendant at my previous company. The security folks reported him to the HR. The HR messaged his boss and his boss spoke with him. In that situation he knew that he is not going to get fired because the HR did not directly speak with him.

How is it that every other day I see someone making a post that they spoke with the HR in this subreddit? How is it that the HR is so accessible to you guys? Don't they have anything better to do with their time too?

Edit: Of course you see the HR in your exit interview. I forgot about that.
