Between Destiny 1 and 2, I must have put a few hundred hours into the game at this point. During almost all of that time I've played Titan. However, I've never felt completely comfortable playing the class. I could ask "what class should I play", but it sounds like a question coming from someone who has never touched the game before. What I want to get across here is that the question of "what should I play?" isn't me asking "Which class is the most fun?" or "Which class is the best?". What I'm asking is "Which class can *I* play most efficiently given my specific playstyle?"
I think my anxiety comes from the fact that while I do play Titan, the only subclass I enjoy is sunbreaker. I like to keep my distance and throw hammers at things and I enjoy using the sticky grenade (probably from the extensive amount of Halo I've played). I don't like striker because it requires me to get out from behind cover and expose myself to use my super. I don't like sentinel because holding up a shield is boring - it reminds me of playing Reinhardt in overwatch. To top it all off, I rarely use the Barricade ability regardless of which subclass I'm playing. Overall, only using one subclass, and not even using all its abilities, seems like such a cramped way to play.
In all the time I've played Destiny I have barely touched hunter and warlock. I think there is an anxiety that comes along with trying something new. I could spend 100 hours thoroughly testing every subclass of both classes only to find that I didn't enjoy any of it.
As far as hunter is concerned... I like the cape? I don't know if that is a reason to play one class over another, especially since 95% of the time I won't even be seeing my own character. I also know, like barricade with the titan, I will barely use the hunter dodge ability. It just doesn't seem very useful most of the time, and I think I'm too old to master the split-second timing needed to utilize it efficiently. I also like the idea that hunters are "about" revolvers and snipers. I played the hunter class in Borderlands for that reason alone. Though, unlike Borderlands, classes in Destiny 2 don't have inherent bonuses to certain weapon types. I'm not sure if the sniper motif is purely for aesthetics or if there is some hidden bonus D2 Hunters get with snipers that I don't know about. I don't really know anything about the subclasses. Do hunters even get a sticky grenade?
I don't know anything about warlocks.
I'm not sure if my "playstyle" is apparent through what I've said so far, but let me elaborate a little just in case.
- In RPGs or MMOs I almost always play a tank. In shooters I almost always play a sniper. Destiny sits somewhere between the two, so I'm not sure which way to go.
- I almost never play mages in games, which makes me think I won't like warlock.
- I can't stand playing "squishy" characters. This is part of the reason why I don't play mages in games. It's also the reason why I thought Titan would be a good choice. I'm just not entirely sure how much more "squishy" hunters and warlocks even are compared to the Titan.
I also have to ask myself if switching classes is "worth it". Is all the progress I've made on Titan worth resetting because my overall play experience might be better in the long-run from playing a different class? Is it worth switching classes, knowing that I may find that I prefer Titan and I've just wasted my time with another class?
Writing this all out has caused me to realize how much of an anxiety driven person I am. I also realize that I know very little about the game, despite playing it for hundreds of hours and watching dozens of youtube videos about it.
Anyway, I'm really interested to see what people have to say about this. Thanks for reading.
