Hey there everyone! Insert “can you believe it’s already December” here, with a healthy side serving of “can’t wait for this year to be over.” We’re stoked that you’ve decided to spend even a portion of your remaining 2023 with us. Read on for myriad updates, a helpful MPT (Mod Pro Tip), and two very different communities worth a peep.
Updates From The Admins
Our biggest news from November involved a heads up that we had a plan for Removing Dormant Subreddits in November (this has happened, yay) and this announcement about a new mobile Mod Queue. Mods may start seeing the revamped mod queue as early as this week, but please be aware that the rollout will be gradual and may extend into the new year (we’re taking our time to ensure everything works as intended). People were particularly pleased to hear that this change would permit them to remove comments more quickly, without providing a removal reason.
And, ok, technically it was in December but in case you missed it: Mod World happened. Thousands of mods came together to hear from other mods and admins about spam, inclusion, and what happened when u/spez joined the mod team of r/amitheasshole. To give us feedback on Mod World 2023, please fill out this form! We read every single comment.
At Mod World, we launched Reddit for Communities, a new hub for all sorts of information that could help mods, such as weekly guides for your first month of community-building as well as community success stories for those wondering how other great communities came to be. If you have a success story to share with other Reddit mods, please fill out this form.
Finally, in this month’s round of “is that really modnews?”.... You may notice some different colors on r/modnews, r/modsupport and other official places. It’s because we updated Reddit’s branding last month. NB: Snoo has thumbs!
You’ll find all that and more on r/modnews and r/reddit, open 24/7 for your news-and-discussion-related enjoyment. Be the first to know what’s happening on Reddit by subscribing to each; we’d love to see you there.
MPT (Mod Pro Tip):
Have a subreddit on your modlist that you're feeling less than excited about? You can hand that community over to a new set of mods fairly easily. The quickest way is to remove yourself, which is totally okay to do. If a community becomes mod-less, then it is free to be adopted via the r/redditrequest process. For a more hands-on approach, you can put your community up for adoption via r/adoptareddit and choose your successors yourself. And if you just want to get a bit of help from other mods (or volunteer to help others!), head on over to r/needamod. (Obligatory “It’s dangerous to go alone - take this” for completionists.)
Community Interest
Speaking of communities doing cool things, r/firefighting had an exciting milestone recently – they reached 100,000 subscribers! This is a community for all things fire and rescue, open to the general public along with career and volunteer firefighters and appreciators of firefighting culture. They even have a weekly employment thread that helps users looking to jump start a career as firefighters. Check them out!
On the opposite spectrum of light and heat lives r/ContamFam, which hosts a collection of mycopals who help each other overcome the many challenges of mushroom cultivation. The subreddit features an educational collection of blogs and videos on how to treat and prevent contamination that can destroy a mushroom cultivation in their sidebar. If you’re interested in the science of fungi (mycology), this might be a fun new community to join.
Farewell, until next month year
Have a wonderful rest-of-your-December, and if you’re nearby, please save the date for this upcoming Mod Roadshow: Atlanta Edition on January 26, 2024! Here’s hoping that 2024 brings you joy, peace, and tons of fun.
Resources for how to contact us:
If you need to contact us about an issue, here’s how you can do that. If you’re looking for other moderation resources, you can find those on our Mod Help Center.
A quick reminder: If you’d prefer not to get these Snoosletters in your inbox, just hit the “Block User” button under this message on desktop.
