How to handle this situation...help my friend

my friend is left home alone in another country with severe depression episode ( i guess idk how to call it)
He has depression for few years but sometimes his depression get very bad. He can't get out of the bed, dont eat until someone provide him the food, the same with water. Did somebody went trough something similiar too ? any advices how to handle ?
