I think I totally misunderstood the whole concept of the companion certificate . All the while I thought that getting the Platinum AMEX will give me a free RT main cabin ticket for two plus taxes.

When I was booking for a JFK-SEA flight, 4 months in advanced, I still do see LUTXV flights. When I booked the flight for two, with companion certificate applied, the cost was around 420. If I don't use the companion certificate, the flight is 860.

Does this mean that the companion certificate really is buying ticket for two for the price of one?
