Assuming the overweight bag fee is related more to the handling of the heavy bags and getting them on and off the plane than actually transporting them, right?
I used to think it was the other way around until I witnessed four hockey players leaving BNA this past Monday. They all had giant bags to lug their gear in and the goalie's bag came in at a whopping 83lbs. The person behind the counter informed the guy the fee was $200 and I thought he was going to fall over. The counter agent then says if he can get it below 70lbs, it would only be $100 so he asks one of the other hockey guys if he could put some of his stuff in his bag. The guy says yes and sure enough, they get the goalies bag to 69 pounds. The other two hockey players see this and ask what's going on and with that, they offer to take more of the goalies stuff. When it was all said and done, the goalies bag was right at 50lbs and the other three we also under 50lbs.
So, no extra fees for Delta but yet the same weight on the plane so the fees must be for the extra handling of heavy bags than anything else.
