How to safely surf the deep web?

I am on a mac and I know that downloading TOR browser is the safe bet, but I have a few questions, 1. Does TOR keep me anonymous or do I have to do something extra? 2. Could I be caught for something illegal while using TOR browser, if so, how can I prevent it?
