We are actually African American, but I remember my mother became a “housewife” when I was in elementary school (in part due to us not having enough money for daycare.) I remember my father playing “ain’t no mountain high enough” and singing along to it. My parents took my brother and I to a 50s-style diner when we went on vacation in 2021. I remember my mother in particular tried raising me to be a “prim, proper, polite, feminine” girl. However, my mother has actually always been a very outspoken person.
I grew up watching Back to the Future, I had the first two films on DVD and was always watching them over and over again. My parents have always seemed nostalgic over the 80s to me
My mother has compared me to Diana Ross a few times (“you are the boss, Ms. Ross!” jokingly (and suggested I looked like Diana Ross when my hair was in a blowout style.)
