Probably the best drummer alive or possible, not that we're "counting". YES, Mike Mangini played EXACTLY 1200 64th notes in a pressroll on digital counter-pad making him the (irrefutably) fastest BUT no one can out-dedicate Zach, who seems to hav steered a mad-scientist-degree ov perkuss-o-fatuation out from an unglamorous Obsessiv-Compulsiv Disorder and into an incomparably full-blown percussomania so total as to be actually, and famously, killing him. The shittiest drumset abusable is made to sound like the taj mafuckinghal under his woeful duress. His flams hav flams. Tendonitis FEARS HIM. His natural default pulse is the 32nd note which makes his beat-spraying vitriol inherently biomech; you could switch his "drums" out with cardboard boxes as he channelled an eight-armed grandfather-clock automaton writ weird and there would be no timbral loss in the delivery, so focused ar his impacts. I don't even think Zach PLAYS BEATS, I get the impression he's not even "playing", (more like "invoking" or "working"?) and regardless ov the verbs he conjugates the result would be closer described as the FORMATION ov BARRAGES. I hav never seen any drummer able to rotate a meter around his limbs, (both hands to hand-foot, to both feet, to to other-foot-hand and back again) with his proficiency: it seems like every possible beat combination has been tried forward and backward. Assigning his metrical properties with a designation like "blastbeats" seems redundant; in the gnarl'd hands ov this blastbeast there never was any other KIND (ov "beat"). His songwriting and composition exhibits a similarly-rich quality of idiosyncrasy, of a deeply personal aesthetic unhindered by exterior influence; it reminds me ov Brian Eno's early solo work, not because it sounds like that, but because, like Eno's early work, it only sounds like itself and none other and there's a DISTINKT tonality and a sonic center that would rear its unmistakeable head independent ov the particulars ov a chosen instrumentation or an enlisted engineer or an assigned treatment. I might be convinced that Zach Hill is the most biomech ov us all because the INHUMAN degree ov his olympic performance rigor seems to be characteristically defined by the constant reminder that he is NOT A MACHINE, or, mor precisely, that his Machine, being sarcoplasmic, is unable to SUSTAIN the mechanical intensity his endurance demands ov it. A true GENIUS ov INJURY.
