Something that always confused me

Doc gets sick, most likely tuberculosis, and basically what happens is al calls him out, basically telling him to be such a wimp and surprise, no more tuberculosis and doc is magically better? Just what the hell happened here exactly? Is this just a plot hole or something left further unexplored due to there being no further seasons? I need some explanation here
