Was Hearst as much a scumbag in real life?

I know the show takesany liberties with the truth of deadwood but I'm wondering i earnest to Hearst specifically as I'm having a time trying to find any information. While I know some of his character was changed for the show, was he truly as heartless and ruthless in real life, specifically in the black hills?
