Questions about hardcore

I just have a few questions about hardcore that I haven't seen addressed anywhere else.

Does my character need to be alive at the end of the season to get rewards? I.e. If I make lvl 20 and the favor reward tier but then die trying to make the reaper points would I still get those rewards at the end of the season?
Regarding character transfers at the end of the season, can I transfer them to a server that I don't have an open character slot? And if so, does that count as getting a new slot? In other words could I delete one of the characters and still have an open slot to make a new guy?
