After my previous character died due to a glitch, I was pretty bummed out. I spawned and headed to Cherno, not really caring about this character's life. I skirted around some bars, picking up a CZ, .45, and very little ammo for each. As I got deeper into the city, a zombie saw me... I shot it, and there came the hoard.
I was frantically running... I had some good loot, now I didn't want to die. I remembered reading something about zombies disliking docks, so I ran to a dock and lay down. The zombies gathered all about, but never actually stepped foot onto the dock. There must have been 25 of them, it seemed like half of Cherno had been chasing me.
I had maybe ten bullets between my CZ and my .45, so I honestly didn't know what to do. I looked around, and noticed another survivor maybe 20 meters away, also on the dock, who had been watching me this entire time. I aimed my .45 at his head, and he aimed his Makarov at mine. "Peace," I said, and he obliged. I'd later find out that the Makarov didn't even have ammo.
While we were wallowing in self-pity over the fact that we were stuck on a dock with 25 zombies blocking us, another guy told us in chat that he could see us, and he was on top of a nearby construction site. He said that we could run to him, and he'd cover us and keep the zombies at bay. My friend on the dock gives me CZ and .45 ammo that he found, and we're just about to make a break for it when another guy runs up, ten more zombies trailing behind him.
We inform our new visitor of our plan, and he says that he also has zero ammo. I shoot a zombie with my CZ, drawing them all towards me, while the other two guys sprint for the construction site. Once I was sure that they had arrived, I follow them- taking the zombie hoard with me. I reach the construction site, scramble up the stairs, then await with my three new friends for the inevitable hoard.
The hoard slowly walked up the stairs, and together we dispatched at least 30 zombies. The stairs were coated in bodies, and almost all of our guns were completely dry. The guy who was at the construction site originally had an AK, but it was completely out of ammo. I had hoarded Makarov ammo on the trip to Cherno, so I passed it out among the roof.
Eventually, me and the AK guy decided to scavenge a nearby apartment, leaving the other two Makarov guys to guard our "base." He found an m1911, I found four more .45 ammo speedloaders and a map, compass, and watch. We made it back safely, and made sure everyone had plenty of food/ammo. We shared stories of previous lives, Steam names, and food. Night began to fall, and the guy with the AK went off to scrounge up more supplies. We had become comfortable enough with each other to stand up on the roof, and an unseen sniper shot each of us dead. The AK guy was the only survivor.
This is why I'll never shoot on sight. Sure, most of the people you meet won't hesitate to blow your head off the second you turn your back, but there's also a chance that you'll meet someone as desperate as you who might be willing to help.
