Northwest Dayton: safe & affordable
Post Body

I just want to give a shout-out for an overlooked living opportunity in Dayton: the neighborhoods north and west of downtown, along Salem Avenue. There are some great pockets of historic, stable and safe neighborhoods with huge old houses. There is so much charm! A mortgage payment in this part of town is extremely affordable. Downtown rents and the historic neighborhoods that ring downtown are getting so costly that young families are priced out. These parts of Dayton are beautiful and amazing and a real renaissance is happening in neighborhoods like Dayton View Triangle, Five Oaks and Dayton View. They are also historic. I am not blind to the property crime that happens in any city, but I have never felt unsafe walking around the neighborhood. And yes, a few blocks can make a big difference. These neighborhoods were built as a refuge after the 1913 flood due to them being on higher ground. They were historically Jewish, then predominantly African American, and now getting to be a rainbow of diversity. Welcome! Iā€™m just tired of people thinking that these neighborhoods are full of vice and evil due to childhood memories of people who were born 1950-1980. Those racist attitudes have to end. Neighborhoods change and evolve, and this is a great place to live. Might be the last place to find affordable housing in Dayton. Downtown is only a few minutes away!
