Really don't want to do online dating. Convince me otherwise.

I am almost 22 and have never dated. I'm not the prettiest and I can be pretty introverted. My standards aren't too high, but bonus points if the guy likes sports or is athletic.
I'm not interested in anyone at my tiny college, and I love my guy friends but they're either taken, not into me, or gay.
I've heard a couple of stories where people meet their SO online, but what sites? How can I actually find a meaningful connection with someone online?
