Avoiding Flaking/Last-minute Cancellations?

Anyone know how to avoid what seems like a high proportion of flaking/last-minute cancelations to dates that actually happen?
I'm 36F and just had a date for tomorrow night canceled. I was particularly excited about this one, so that hurts, but it also hurts because it's one in a long string of guys who talk to me, seem interested, then either flake on our date or never ask me out. I know this is somewhat common, it just f'ing hurts!
