Date days he doesn’t think he will ever love someone as much as he loves his ex.

I went out on a date with him although it wasn’t the first time I see him. He started talking about his ex, how they met, and every little detail that lead to the breakup and how heart broken he was and how he doesn’t think he will ever love someone as much as he loved her. He will never put this much effort again because he learned his lesson now. Then he proceeds to say that it was a year ago, he got over her and is ready to date again. I’m confused.
